In early 2025 I watched Spellers and realised I’d got it all wrong. For 30 years I largely went along with the narrative that non-speakers must have learning disabilities. Even though, numerous times I caught glimpses of so much more going on, I did not fully presume competence and ultimately let people down.
I sobbed through the documentary and vowed from that moment on I’d change how I approach my work with non-speakers and their families. I shared the film with my colleagues and began actively working to shift perceptions – advocating for the presumption of competence for all non-speakers, minimal speakers, and unreliable speakers.
Within a couple of months, I enrolled to become a certified Spellers Method Provider, motivated by the desire to offer as many people as possible the opportunity to communicate what they truly want to say and to spread the message of presuming competence for all non-speakers.
I now bring 3 decades of experience as an early intervention specialist teacher, support worker, adult services manager and social care professional within a local authority, to my role as Spellers Method Provider.
I feel honoured to work alongside children and adults and their families offering spelled communication that nurtures growth, expands possibility, and supports greater freedom and autonomy for all non-speakers.
